I’m passing on this earworm to you. I’ve had Elastica’s “Connection” in my head since I saw the Blackberry movie six weeks ago. (Full credit to Wire for the riff that kicks off this song). The trailer for the movie uses the tune but doesn’t do credit to how well it’s employed in the actual film, so my suggestion is: watch it.
It’s a great ride: the rise and fall of the Blackberry, with no filler related to the brief in-between period when Research in Motion was riding high.
It’s funny, moving, and ultimately tragic, with so many highlights: the Gary Bettman subplot, the pre-financial crisis tech culture, Saul Rubinek as a New York financier, the reminder that Palm Pilots existed at all. And if you’re looking for something to teach someone about how a hero’s fatal flaw will inevitably lead to their demise, this will do nicely as an object lesson.
